Sabarmati Ashram

Since we are commemorating Gandhi, the first landmark had to be the iconic Sabarmati Ashram. Also known as the Satyagraha Ashram, this is the site that marked the base of the Dandi March—one of the strongest acts of the nonviolent non-cooperation movement propagated by Gandhi. It is also the place where Gandhi spent 12 years of his life with his wife. Needless to say, visiting this ashram is an important part of an Ahmedabad tour that you shouldn’t miss.

Lucknow Residency

This place has seen one of the most dramatic starts of India’s struggle for freedom and its reminders can still be seen in the property in the form of cannonball and bullet marks. It was in this historical place that the siege of Lucknow took place and lasted for 148 days. The British supporters were held for a long period. Upon their fleeing, the place came under the control of the Indian sepoys, giving them the first taste of freedom and the will to fight for it.

Jhansi Fort

Another glorious reminder of the strength of Indians shown against the Britishers, the Jhansi Fort is a magnificent structure and one of the strangleholds of the Bundela Dynasty. During the mutiny of 1857, the valiant Rani Lakshmibhai took the reigns of the fort in her hands against the East India Company and became an unforgettable hero of India’s freedom struggle.

Jallianwala Bagh

One of the most popular destinations of the Amritsar sightseeing tour, Jallianwala Bagh is actually a sad reminder of the brutality of the East India Company. It was here that General Dyer ordered open fire, killing over a thousand innocent men, women, and children. Bullet marks are still visible on the walls, taking visitors back in time.

Cellular Jail

Known as Kala Pani in the past, this prison is now a national memorial that takes us back to the time when important figures of the freedom movement were imprisoned and tortured here. One of the most frequently visited attractions of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, this place gives you a slight sense of the commitment of the freedom fighters to the cause of the nation’s liberation.

Mangal Pandey Park

Marked in history as the first martyr of India, Mangal Pandey is a revolutionary figure who sowed the seeds of the desire for freedom in the hearts of the masses. The Mangal Pandey Park in Barrackpore, West Bengal, is the place immortalized in time as the site where Indians fought for independence for the very first time. One must visit it to respect and appreciate the freedom we have today.

Gandhi Smriti

And the final landmark on the list is another abode of Mahatma Gandhi. A prominent place in the Delhi city tour, Gandhi Smriti (formerly known as Birla House) is where Gandhi spent the final days of his life before his assassination. Now turned into a museum, it served as his headquarters once.
